Launceston is Australia’s third oldest city, with a proud past and a bright future.

As the largest Local Government in Tasmania, the City of Launceston is a diverse organisation. It operates a world-class sporting stadium, a nationally renowned museum and art gallery and a world-class aquatic centre and serves the greater Launceston area, home to nearly 110,000 people. Along with all the day to day functions of a largely metropolitan Council, the strategic future focus has increasingly pointed to liveability as a key attribute for the city.

This is well encapsulated in the vision of the Launceston City Deal, “to be Australia’s most liveable and innovative regional city, with growing incomes and falling levels of disadvantage." Signed in April 2017, the Launceston City Deal, Tasmania's first City Deal, and the second for Australia, is a ten-year agreement between the Australian and Tasmanian Governments, and the City of Launceston that will shape the city’s future, create jobs and generate economic growth for the region by building on its natural advantages.

The three levels of government are working together with local partners and the community to achieve this shared vision which will see the city become an even more vibrant place to live, visit and work or study. The inner city is being revitalised with welcoming public spaces and new inner city housing and retail developments, new tertiary educational opportunities and infrastructure central to the future of the city are well advanced along with a healthier Tamar River and major focus on digital infrastructure and a strong business "start-up" culture. This work is complemented by initiatives spanning education and employment, city planning and housing, digital innovation and sustainability.
