The Greater Hobart Committee was established by the Greater Hobart Act 2019 with the intent to better integrate strategic land use and infrastructure planning in Greater Hobart.

Membership of the Committee comprises Tasmanian Government Ministers responsible for four portfolio areas and the Mayors of the Clarence, Glenorchy, Hobart and Kingborough councils.

The work of the Committee will focus on the urban metropolitan area of Greater Hobart, and is intended to complement broader land use planning mechanisms such as the Southern Tasmania Regional Land Use Strategy, noting the important links with the broader southern Tasmania region and the State as a whole.

The inaugural Work Program for the Committee among other things sought to

- develop an overarching shared vision for the Greater Hobart area, and
- provide for an update of the Southern Tasmania Regional Land Use Strategy, by developing a MetroPlan for Greater Hobart

The 2050 Vision for Greater Hobart has been released, and work on the Metropolitan Plan (MetroPlan) is ongoing but is expected to be released around mid-2022. The MetroPlan will seek to provide a spatial plan for the Greater Hobart area to assist its growth and development over coming years.
