Located on the western shore of the Derwent River, Glenorchy is Tasmania’s fourth largest local government area with a population of around 48,000 people. It encompasses Hobart’s northern suburbs and is one of four Councils in Greater Hobart.

Glenorchy is known for its beautiful parks, walking and mountain bike trails, and spectacular views of Mt Wellington, as well as being a commercial and industrial hub. The City attracts international and interstate visitors with its buzzing arts scene, world-famous Mona, and events facilities such as MyState Bank Arena, home of the Tasmanian JackJumpers.

Glenorchy is one of Tasmania’s most socio-economically disadvantaged communities, with historically high unemployment. However, Glenorchy is changing. In recent years, our community has agreed a new Economic Development Strategy and progressed several initiatives to grow our economy and community pride. This includes residents articulating identities for three activity centres – Moonah, Glenorchy CBD and Claremont – through the Beyond the Curtain campaign. Council also developed The Greater Glenorchy Plan, including precinct plans to activate and densify each centre. In 2021, Council supported the award-winning placemaking program, Showcase Moonah, celebrating our places and people through 14 events and activities. We also commissioned local artists to paint murals along our InterCity cycleway, creating a Corridor of Modern Art, loved by locals and visitors alike. These activities, together with our $1.9billion development pipeline which will create 1500 jobs in the coming years, and a new Jobs Hub helping locals secure these jobs, shows the future is bright for the people of Glenorchy.
