INGRID CUMMING

Ingrid Cumming is a Whadjuk Balardong Noongar woman from Fremantle, Western Australia and recognised young leader within the First Nations community. Ingrid is the previous founder of Kart Koort Wiern and now Founder and Owner of IngridCumming.com. Ingrid’s has a background representing First Nations Business globally for over ten years, alumni of Murdoch University and Melbourne Business School. Ingrid was part of the establishment of the Indigenous Women in Business network and has served as a Commissioner for Conservation for the WA state government. Ingrid has worked with a variety of sectors and organisations, creating, facilitating and evaluating programs and strategies to address their issues and strengths. Ingrid has won and been a finalist in a range of awards like NAIDOC Perth, Telstra Women in Business, Curtin Vice-Chancellor Awards, ‘Champion for Change’ by EPHEA (Equity Practitioners in Higher Education Australasia), WA Heritage Awards and Belmont Small Business Awards. Ingrid has presented at various forums and conferences around the world in relation to engagement, equity and diversity matters including as a delegate at the UN Women Leaders Conference in Israel in 2013, TedXPerth in 2014 been on various TV programs, including the Drum in 2021.Ingrid is a strong ally of LGBTIQ, First Nations, Youth and diverse groups, stakeholders and organisations.

GAVIN ASHLEY

Head of Better Cities & Regions, Director of Sustainability, HIP V. HYPE
Panel Speaker

Gavin is the Head of Better Cities & Regions and a Director of Sustainability at HIP V. HYPE. With more than 15 years’ experience in urban development and sustainability across the private, non-profit and public sectors, Gavin leads the technical delivery of climate mitigation and adaptation planning – developing policies, frameworks, tools and guidelines to promote more sustainable outcomes at precinct and city scale. Gavin is a One Planet Integrator with Bioregional Australia and Green Star Accredited Professional (Green Star Communities). He was integral in the development of the Sustainable Subdivisions Framework, a guideline enabling residential subdivisions to be adaptive and resilient to the changing climate. Gavin also led the delivery of the award-winning Green Infrastructure Assessment Tool for City of Melbourne, designed to facilitate the inclusion of green infrastructure in our urban environments.


Jocelyn Chiew

Jocelyn Chiew is an Architect, Landscape Architect and Urban Designer. As Director City Design at the City of Melbourne, she plays a key role in creating and enabling inclusive, sustainable and enduring public spaces. Jocelyn leads the city’s in-house multidisciplinary design practice. City Design studio plans, designs and delivers council strategies and public works, and provides design review for significant development proposals. Jocelyn also leads the city's Design Excellence Program and is Deputy Chair of the Melbourne Design Review Panel. Her industry appointments include member of the Office of the Victorian Government Architect’s Victorian Design Review Panel, Fellow at the Australian Institute of Landscape Architects, member of Gender Equity Victoria's Put Her Name on It Reference Group, and former State and National Councillor at the Australian Institute of Architects.

KEYNOTE SPEAKER

He is one of Australia’s leading experts on digital technology and artificial intelligence strategy and policy.He routinely provides consulting advisory services to industry and government organisations on these topics. He led the development of the national AI roadmap and ethics framework published by the Australian Government. He recently led a body of work about the application of AI for science, research and knowledge discovery. His most recent report is Australia’s national AI Ecosystem report, launched in December 2023, which details the capabilities and specialisations of Australia’s emerging AI companies and AI R&D sector. In related work with the Technology Council of Australia he led a project and report which mapped and described Australia’s own unique “Silicon Valleys” – geographic clusters of digital technology industry in cities and regions. His current work with the National Artificial Intelligence Centre (NAIC) is focused on practical and simple ways Australian companies of all shapes and sizes can pick up the powerful and complex AI toolkit. He aims to help companies choose the right tools for the right business problems and how they can adapt to a changing marketplace due to AI-fuelled disruption. In addition to having excellent knowledge of AI technology Stefan is an engaging, entertaining and thought-provoking speaker. He can help you understand how dynamic, fascinating and powerful AI technologies can be used in your career, profession, company and organisation to achieve the future you want.


ROSS HARDING

Principal, Finding Infinity
Keynote & Panel Speaker

Equal parts trouble maker, technical mind, and creative, Harding is one of the most enthusiastic, optimistic and cheeky engineers you’ve ever met. A rare combination of dreamer and schemer: he thinks big picture about transforming cities around the world to become completely self-sufficient. At the same time working tirelessly with his team at Finding Infinity to actually make it happen. Operating across a range of scales from city-wide master planning to precincts, building design, and even temporary events, Finding Infinity are doing their best at turning dreams into reality. Short for finding a future based on infinite resources, Finding Infinity is a creative and technical environmental consultancy. His team of unique characters based in Melbourne consist of architects, engineers, economists, artists, and more. Best known for “A New Normal”: a $100 billion strategy to transform Melbourne into a self-sufficient city together with 15 architecture firms. Conceptualised and initiated in his living room in Fitzroy, A New Normal now has over $200 million worth of live projects spread across Melbourne. Each project delivers profitable examples with the private sector, engages with the general public in a colourful way, and is specifically designed to inform much needed policy.


PROFESSOR DAN HILL

Melbourne School of Design, The University of Melbourne
KEYNOTE AND PANEL SPEAKER

Professor Dan Hill is Director of Melbourne School of Design, the graduate school in the Faculty of Architecture, Building and Planning at the University of Melbourne. A designer and urbanist, Dan's previous design leadership roles include the Swedish government’s innovation agency Vinnova in Stockholm, Arup in London and Sydney, Fabrica in Treviso, the Finnish Innovation Fund SITRA in Helsinki, and the UK's Future Cities Catapult and BBC in London. Dan has lived and worked in UK, Australia, Finland, Italy, and Sweden. Dan is also a Visiting Professor of Practice at UCL's Institute for Innovation and Public Practice and a founder member of the Council on Urban Initiatives, a joint venture between UN HABITAT, LSE and UCL, and has held roles as Professor at the Oslo School of Architecture and Design and Visiting Professor at Design Academy Eindhoven. Dan was one of the inaugural Design Advocates for the Mayor of London and a Trustee of Participatory City Foundation, and is now on the board of Collingwood Yards in Melbourne and the Advisory Group of Open Systems Lab. Dan is the author of the books 'Dark Matter & Trojan horses: A strategic design playbook' (Strelka Press, 2012) and 'Designing missions' (Vinnova, 2022).


PETRA HURTADO

Chief Foresight and Knowledge Officer, American Planning Association
KEYNOTE AND PANEL SPEAKER

Petra (Stieninger) Hurtado, Ph.D. is the Chief Foresight & Knowledge Officer at the American Planning Association, leading APA’s foresight practice to leverage knowledge as a catalyst for innovation and resilience in the planning profession and the organization.  

In her role, Petra is responsible for identifying, developing, and capitalizing on opportunities to create and disseminate knowledge essential to an effective planning practice today and in the future. She oversees APA’s research, foresight, international, marketing, communications, and career services functions. Petra provides strategic input to APA’s strategy system through APA’s foresight-first governance, advancing a dynamic and resilient path forward for the organization. 

She has a Ph.D. in urban planning from the Vienna University of Technology. Her areas of expertise and research include strategic foresight, urban futures, emerging technologies, urban sustainability, and environmental psychology.  

As an adjunct professor, Petra has taught courses on planning with foresight at the University of Maryland and on urban sustainability and environmental psychology at the Vienna University of Technology. She has presented as a keynote speaker and subject matter expert at numerous conferences across the globe and guest lectured at Harvard GSD, Virginia Tech, among other universities. 

Passionate about empowering planners to thrive in dynamic environments, Petra combines academic rigor with practical wisdom to inspire action and drive positive change. 


Jeanette Kwek

Head, Centre for Strategic Futures, Singapore
KEYNOTE SPEAKER


Jeanette Kwek is the Head of the Centre for Strategic Futures. Jeanette joined the civil service in 2005, starting her career at the Ministry of Defence, where she worked on Singapore’s defence relations with international partners. In 2009, she became one of the founding members of the Centre for Strategic Futures (CSF). Since then, she has worked in roles connecting foresight with geostrategic issues. In her current role, she oversees the Centre’s research agenda, its extensive international networking efforts, and work in growing foresight capabilities across the Singapore Public Service. Jeanette is a political scientist and economist by training, having graduated with honours from the University of Chicago in 2005. She continues to stay current in the field as an alumna of the Munich Young Leaders, International Institute of Strategic Studies’ Southeast Asian Young Leaders Program and the Young Strategists Forum. She is married with two young children. In whatever spare time the children leave her with, she nurses a dangerous addiction to caffeine and the written word.


DAN MCKENNA

CEO, NIGHTINGALE housing
KEYNOTE AND PANEL SPEAKER

Dan has been an employee of Nightingale Housing since its earliest days, having seen the company through all stages of its evolution and myriad of challenging situations. With experience at Nightingale in various roles and a proven track record in developing a strong team culture, Dan was appointed as the inaugural Chief Executive Officer in 2022. The position allows him to steer the direction of Nightingale’s future whilst also providing the opportunity for a generational leadership change, to build on the learnings of the past six years and consolidate the gains as the organisation plans a large slate of new developments across the country.

Dan previously worked at Breathe, and was a member of the design team on the first Nightingale project, Nightingale 1. Hence, Dan has a detailed understanding of the architectural aspects that are so broadly associated with Nightingale, as well as the social, financial and managerial aspects.


Kate Meyrick

Director, Urbis

Kate is a passionate urbanist and place maker with more than 30 years of international experience working throughout Australia, Asia, Europe, Middle East and the USA. She is globally respected for her expertise in visioning and positioning city scale precincts, working sensitively with stakeholders and the community to co-create powerful new futures for well-loved places. She has been influential in shaping thinking about the global competitiveness of Australian Cities, their future identity and quality of life. A regular key-note speaker, panellist, conference moderator and writer; Kate is recognised as a thought leader in relation to urban performance, city shaping precincts and places and rail-led regeneration. Kate thrives on collaboration and works effectively in partnership with government, community, non- profit and private sector stakeholders. She has strong experience in conceptualising and delivering complex urban projects: working with a diverse mix of stakeholders to curate a bold and innovative vision for future urban life that will deliver enduring shared value outcomes.


PROFESSOR BARBARA NORMAN MPIA (Life Fellow)

Emeritus Professor of Urban & Regional Planning, The University of Canberra
PANEL SPEAKER

Professor Barbara Norman is Emeritus Professor of Urban & Regional Planning at the University of Canberra and an Honorary Professor at the Australian National University, Australia. She is Chair of the Urban Policy Forum advising the Australian Government and National Chair of the Australian Coastal Society. Barbara is also Director of the Urban Climate Change Research Network Oceania Hub (Columbia University, USA) and co-chair of Planners for Climate Action (UN Habitat). Professor Norman is a global expert in sustainable cities and regions, smart infrastructure, coastal planning, climate change adaptation and urban governance. Professor Norman has a combined professional and academic background, having worked at all levels of government and run her own practice. She is a former national president of the Planning Institute of Australia, and an honorary member of the Royal Town Planning Institute (UK). Recent international research includes Sustainable Pathways for our Cities and Regions: planning within planetary boundaries (Routledge, 2018); Are autonomous cities our urban future? Comment in Nature Communications (Nature Communications, 2018) and Apocalypse Now: Australian Bushfires and the future of Urban Settlements (Nature Urban Sustainability). Professor Norman’s recent book is Urban Planning for Climate Change (Routledge, October 2022).


Tess Pickering MPIA

Deputy Director-General of Planning, Department of State Development,

Tess is an experienced and energetic planner, passionate about delivering placed based planning outcomes that make a real impact – shaping Queenslander’s lives now and for the future. Tess embraces the big challenges with a focus on collaboration, taking inspiration from working alongside people with the confidence to push boundaries, contribute ideas and come up with solutions together. Particular focus has been on greener and cooler streets, enabling people to live more locally, more affordable homes and engaging with our First Nation peoples better in the planning framework. Returning home to Queensland after five years in Melbourne working for the Victorian Planning Authority, Tess is committed to plans that promote inclusivity while accommodating growth and embodying our distinctly Queensland lifestyle. Since being back in Queensland, Tess has overseen the delivery of ShapingSEQ 2023, a bold plan that aims to provide access to the types of homes that South East Queenslanders want, and where and when they want them. Her attention now turns to leading the delivery of the government’s ambitious planning agenda with key partners and stakeholders – one that includes a statewide regional planning program, and responsibilities under the newly released ‘Homes for Queenslanders’ to ‘build more homes, faster’.
