The Northern Territory Government’s new Department of Lands, Planning and Environment brings together expertise in one agency to collaboratively guide efficient regulatory systems, responsible use of our natural and cultural assets and shape the future of the Territory through integrated planning and policy development. 

The Department facilitates sustainable development and acts as a key enabler for the responsible economic growth, social well-being and preservation of the Territory for future generations. 

The Department: 

  • releases and manages land to support community needs, population growth and economic development. 
  • supports the NT Planning Commission to set the strategic framework for integrated land use and infrastructure planning. 
  • provides land use planning, development assessment, building control, government information and spatial analytics as well as land administration and land development services. 
  • coordinates water security and climate change outcomes for the Territory, and natural resource management including the scientific assessment of flora, fauna, land and water assets and the allocation, management and monitoring of these resources to enable their sustainable and responsible use. 
  • provides assessment, monitoring and compliance support and services on behalf of the NT Environment Protection Authority to support environmentally sustainable development. 
  • works in partnership with landholders to manage our land and water resources which are essential to Northern Australia’s development. 
  • protects, preserves and promotes the Territory’s rich and diverse history and culture through curated collections and preservation of historic sites.
