Conference Welcome, Welcome to Country and Opening Keynote Address Prioritising Resilient Strategies to Navigate an Uncertain Future by David Vautin
Transport investments and policies are not immune from global uncertainties, from new technologies to shifting economic conditions to accelerating impacts from climate change. The COVID pandemic vividly illuminated these challenges to the broader public, creating a unique opportunity to rethink how we plan and build our transport network. This presentation will share lessons learned from exploratory scenario planning in the San Francisco metropolitan area, as the region sought to make its transport network more resilient for the years and decades ahead while remaining steadfast to community priorities and values.

TRIPS for the Future - Help shape Australia’s first national trip and parking generation platform and analysis tool
PRACTICAL SESSION

If you are a transport professional whose work is informed by existing trip and parking generation data but wish this information was more accessible and insightful, then this workshop is for you. TRIPS - Australia's first national database and insights platform - is in development thanks to funding from iMove, Department of Transport and Main Roads (QLD) and the University of Sydney. The team will be running an interactive workshop that will show you, the target users, how this platform will work and be looking for input, ideas, and discussions on what you want to see when it is released.

The TRIPS workshop will involve a presentation on the project and progress being made. We will talk through the international examples and best practice. The session will utilise snap surveys, group discussion and q&a to get your feedback and suggestions on elements like how to achieve consistent survey data capture in different jurisdictions, the proposed modal hierarchy, and how the database, analysis tool and green travel planning functions will strengthen the value to the industry.

Your input is really important to us. The AITPM workshop will be a great opportunity for the TRIPS team to work with the practitioners and users who will be critical to the value and success of this vital tool. Supun, Michael and Ben look forward to seeing you there.

Day 2 Welcome, Keynote Addresses by Lee Waters MS and Professor Simon Kingham and panel discussion

Our morning addresses and discussion promise to be thought-provoking and impactful and our audience can expect compelling insights into how these leaders have driven and delivered transformational change in the transport system. This session is a must-attend for those seeking to understand the intersection of policy, science, and leadership in facing modern transport challenges and opportunities.

Lee will set-out the changes to the ‘wiring’ of the transport system that have been made over the last five years in order to put it on the trajectory needed to meet NetZero carbon reduction targets. He will discuss the challenges that have been faced in trying to shift the culture of thinking and do-ing, and discuss the role of political and professional leadership in leading change.

Professor Kingham  will present on Deciding transport policy: Matching policies with outcomes and the role of evidence-How do we, or more accurately governments, decide which transport policies to pursue? Do we need to decide which outcomes we are seeking to achieve, and if so, how do we do that? In New Zealand the Ministry of Transport has a Transport Outcomes Framework that is designed to inform policy. But in reality what impact has it had? By examining some key examples of recent transport policy, this presentation will consider the role of outcomes in delivering policy, but also consider whether we actually want evidence-based policy?

Breakout 3: Land Use Forecasting Workshop  - Part 1
PRACTICAL SESSION

Session supported by
A first of its kind in Australia, this workshop will bring together forecasters from across the nation, as well as international keynote speaker Dave Vautin, to discuss common issues and challenges that are faced both now and in the future. The session will be relevant to all who deliver and use these forecasts, developing a better understanding of what is involved in their creation and working together to identify improved processes.

Land use forecasts are one of the key drivers of strategic planning and infrastructure investment. Land use forecasts dictate the growth and location of the population, underpinning the projections of locations of housing, employment, and requirements for schools and community facilities. Strategic plans are highly sensitive to these forecasts, magnifying their significance. Given this, it is beneficial to understand how land use forecasts are produced.

Land use forecasts in Australia are prepared on a state-by-state basis. With increasing demand for granularity, land use forecasts are increasingly being made for smaller zones and for longer time horizons. Producing these forecasts is a time consuming and difficult process, with a high amount of uncertainty. Accounting for uncertainty also demands considerations of different future year scenarios, which adds to the amount of work required to produce land use forecasts.

This workshop brings together land use forecasters from each State and Territory to discuss their current and future processes, and discuss common issues and challenges that are faced both now and in the future. Users of the forecasts (i.e. transport modellers and transport planners) are invited to attend to develop a better understanding of what is involved in their creation.  This workshop is supported by AITPM’s Transport Modelling Network who will help to run it.
